Motifs/Patterns: The base is natural tussar — that warm, honeyed beige the silk comes out of the cocoon with, not a colour anyone dyed in. Against it sit two clear contrast threads: a strong traditional red and a deep royal blue. That red-on-natural pairing is the signature of Assamese weaving, the colour language of the mekhela chador, and it is instantly recognisable to anyone who knows the tradition.
The feel is unmistakably tussar. There's a slub in the yarn — small thick-and-thin irregularities running through the surface — that gives the silk texture you can read with your fingers as well as your eyes. It's dry to the touch rather than slippery, carries a soft natural sheen instead of a shine, and has real body to it. The weave is tight and dense, which is why the saree has weight and holds its drape.
This is an heirloom saree in the truest sense — the kind that goes from grandmother to mother to daughter, and looks better each time it's worn. The intricacy of the work is what sets it apart: this is not decoration added on, it is craftsmanship built into the cloth.
It belongs at weddings, at Durga Puja mornings and through Bihu and the festival season, at pujas and rituals, and at any auspicious family occasion where tradition matters.
The tussar body is marked by the finest pale blue stripes running through it — so fine and so well matched to the yarn that at first glance they read as part of the tussar itself rather than as added colour. They give the surface depth and a subtle weight.
Across that ground sit large motifs in royal blue and red threadwork, placed close together near the top of the saree so the upper drape carries real presence. As the saree moves down its length, the motifs open out and floral forms appear, spaced more generously.
These motifs are chunky and solid rather than delicate — geometric, architectural, built up in blocks of colour. Look at them closely and you can see how carefully each one has been placed and counted into the weave. That density is the point: the motifs have body to them, and they sit inside the cloth rather than resting on top of it.
The pallu is the fullest expression of the work. It is packed with red threadwork, lifted with touches of blue, in a design far denser than anything in the body.
Woven into it are birds — a traditional Assamese motif — along with layered floral and geometric forms and repeating architectural elements. At the start of the pallu, larger motifs mark the transition from body to pallu, and from there the pattern builds until very little of the natural base remains visible.
The pallu finishes with handmade tassels, hand-knotted at the end of the length.
The saree comes with a running blouse piece.
Border Details: The border on an Assam saree is not woven as part of the main length — it is woven separately and attached to the saree after the body is complete. That is how this tradition has always worked, and it is a large part of what makes these sarees so labour-intensive.
Here the border is dense red threadwork, tightly woven, carrying lata work — the flowing creeper-and-vine motif that runs through Assamese design — repeating along its full length. The weave is packed so closely that almost no base shows through.
It runs along both the top and bottom edge of the saree, framing the natural tussar body and giving the whole piece its structure and definition.
Special Techniques: The silk. Pure tussar — wild silk, from moths that feed on forest trees rather than farmed mulberry. It comes with its natural golden-beige colour and characteristic slub already built in, which is why the base needs no dye at all. The saree is Silk Mark certified by the Central Silk Board, guaranteeing 100% natural silk.
The tight weave. Assamese weaving is known for its density. The weft is beaten down hard on every pick, packing the threads close, which is what gives these sarees their weight, their body and their durability. A tightly beaten weave is slower to produce — fewer rows per hour — but it is the reason a saree like this survives generations.
The motifs. Every motif is woven in as extra weft, built row by row. The weaver counts warp threads and inserts the coloured red or blue thread by hand exactly where the design requires, then beats it down and repeats. Nothing is printed or embroidered. Because the motifs here are chunky and solid, each one takes many rows to complete, and a single miscount leaves it lopsided — permanently, once beaten in.
Two colours, doubled work. Using red and blue together means the weaver switches threads constantly within the same area. Each colour is a separate insertion, each change a separate hand movement. A two-colour saree takes far longer than a single-colour one, and the densely clustered upper section takes longer still.
The attached border. This is the part that surprises most people. The border is woven as a separate strip on its own loom and then joined to the finished body by hand. It means the weaver effectively produces two textiles for one saree — and the joining has to be perfect, because a border attached even slightly unevenly will make the saree hang wrong on the body.
Between the tight weave, the dense two-colour motif work, and a border made and attached separately, a saree like this represents weeks of work. There is no way to compress it.

Care Instructions: Only dry cleaning. Never steam iron. If ironing at home, place a cotton/mulmul cloth on top of the saree and use your iron at the lowest heat setting. Our skilled artisans use natural dyes for all our handloom collection and this will protect the intricate zari work, fabric and wont harm your precious handloom.
Store in a cotton bag or a muslin cloth to protect against moisture.
