Motifs/Patterns: This Gadwal comes in a bright lime yellow with a tint of green running through it, a true dual tone that shifts between sunny yellow and fresh green as the silk moves and catches the light. Against it sits a deep maroon border and pallu, lit up with silver and golden zari. It's a combination that radiates positivity. Just looking at it feels like a good morning.
The feel is what makes it special. It's woven in four-ply pure mulberry silk that has been processed to be exceptionally smooth, so the fabric glides through your fingers with a soft, natural lustre. Even with its richness, it stays light on the body and easy to move in, and it's comfortable through most of the year. This saree carries an auspicious energy. It belongs in a wedding trousseau and is right for any wedding function, a dinner party or a puja. When you want a color that says "celebration" without a second thought, this is the one to pick.
The body is where the happiness lives. The lime-yellow dual tone covers the full length, with small woven motifs scattered across it in neat, alternating rows: annapakshi (the mythical swan of South Indian temple art) in red threadwork, alternating with small silver zari buttas. The red swans add warmth and the silver adds sparkle, and they're spaced generously so the bright ground still has room to glow. The effect is cheerful but never busy.
The pallu is the signature Gadwal showpiece. It moves into deep maroon and is filled with layered bands of zari. Wide fields of fine silver zari lattice alternate with rows of golden zari paisleys, each paisley crowned with a small decorative motif. Bands of golden zari medallions and fine silver stripes separate each section, and golden zari borders run down both sides, framing the whole pallu. Gold and silver together on maroon give it that grand, heirloom look Gadwals are known for. The saree ends in tassels and comes with a contrasting blouse piece.
Border Details: A contrasting maroon border runs along the top and bottom of the saree, from end to end. It's built in layers: a band of golden zari worked in a fine, textured pattern, and next to it a band of silver zari with a repeating row of small scroll and rosette motifs. On the inner edge of both borders, a row of olive-green temple spires rises from the maroon into the lime-yellow body. That green picks up the green tint in the body, so the border and body feel connected rather than just placed side by side. The maroon gives the whole saree a strong frame, like a dark picture mount around a bright painting.
Special Techniques: Gadwal sarees come from the town of Gadwal in Telangana, a tradition known for contrast borders, temple spires and grand pallus. This saree is woven entirely by hand in pure mulberry silk, in a four-ply construction: four fine silk threads twisted together into every strand before weaving. Think of four thin strands twisted into one rope. Each thread on its own is fine and light, but together they're strong and durable, which is why the saree holds its shape and lasts for years while still feeling light.
Degumming: why the silk feels so smooth and light. Raw silk straight from the cocoon is coated in a natural gum called sericin. It makes the thread stiff, dull and a little rough, much like uncooked pasta. Before dyeing, the silk yarn is gently boiled in a mild soap solution, which dissolves and washes the gum away. That's degumming. It does three things:
Softness: without the gum, the silk becomes supple and smooth to the touch.
Lustre: the natural shine of the silk fibre is revealed.
Lightness: the gum makes up a real share of raw silk's weight, so removing it leaves a finer, lighter thread that drapes and moves more easily than heavier, stiffer silk.
The degumming on this saree has been done carefully, which is why the fabric feels so smooth and moves so freely on the body.
The dual tone. The lime-and-green effect comes from the weaving, not a dye trick. Threads of one shade run lengthwise (the warp) and threads of another shade run across (the weft). Because they cross at right angles, the color you see depends on your angle to the fabric, so the saree shifts between yellow and green as you move.
Woven as one: the interlocked border. This is an interlocked Gadwal. The border and body weren't made separately and stitched together later; they were woven together on one loom. The lime-yellow body and the maroon border are woven at the same time, each with its own thread, and at the point where they meet, the weaver hooks the two threads around each other by hand on every single row. This interlocking method is known in Telangana as kupadam. The temple spires are built at that same meeting point. Like stacking bricks into a staircase, the weaver lets the border color step a little further into the body for a few rows, then steps it back, building each pointed peak row by row. Because the border is woven into the body thread by thread, it can never come apart. The work usually needs two weavers at the loom working in rhythm, one for the body and one for the border.
The threadwork and zari. The annapakshi, the buttas and the paisleys are all woven in by hand. For each row, the weaver lifts exactly the right warp threads and passes the red silk thread or the zari through only where the motif needs it, then beats the row down and moves on. Row after row, each swan and paisley slowly appears. The zari is tested zari: a silk core wrapped in metallic thread, checked for quality and consistency. It isn't real gold or silver; "tested" refers to the verified quality of the zari. The silk core keeps it soft and flexible, so even the heavily worked pallu drapes smoothly instead of standing stiff, and it holds its shine over the years instead of tarnishing like imitation zari.
Time. Degumming and dyeing the yarn, setting up the loom, interlocking the borders, building every temple spire by hand, and weaving the motifs and a fully worked zari pallu all take time. A Gadwal like this takes several weeks of skilled work from yarn to finished saree. That time is really what you're paying for.
Silk Mark. The saree carries the Silk Mark, the Government of India's certification that it's pure silk. It's independent confirmation of the fabric, not just the seller's word.

Care Instructions: Only dry cleaning. Never steam iron. If ironing at home, place a cotton/mulmul cloth on top of the saree and use your iron at the lowest heat setting.
