Motifs/Patterns: This Kanchipuram pairs black with a deep, dark rose red, lit up with golden zari. It’s made for anyone who loves black but wants it to feel festive. The black stays elegant, the dark rose brings warmth, and the gold makes it celebration-ready. It’s ideal for weddings, reception parties, pujas and any auspicious occasion.
It’s woven in pure mulberry silk, so it has a rich lustre that catches the light in every fold and a fall that drapes smoothly and holds its shape. The colours are deep and the silk glows.
The body is woven in stripes of deep dark rose red and black, divided by fine golden zari lines. The stripes run in a steady, even rhythm along the whole saree, and when it’s draped they create a strong, graphic look that’s modern and classic at once. Scattered across the stripes are small golden zari roses, tiny motifs that add a soft sparkle without breaking the clean pattern. The stripes bring structure, the gold lines bring polish, and the little roses bring delicacy.
The pallu is heavy and luxurious. Almost the entire surface is covered in golden zari, woven in a dense lattice of small diamond and flower motifs, with bands of floral zari work framing it at the top. Gandaberunda birds from the border continue around the edges, so the pallu feels connected to the rest of the saree. Draped over the shoulder, it glows like a sheet of gold, the grand finish this saree builds toward. The saree comes with an attached blouse piece in black with golden zari stripes.
Border Details: The border runs along the top and bottom on a solid black base, and it carries a motif you rarely see: the Gandaberunda, the two-headed mythical bird of South Indian temple art. Each bird is woven in golden tested zari, with two heads turned outward, outstretched wings and a body filled with fine detailed patterns, like a piece of temple jewellery set against black velvet. The birds repeat at even spacing along the full length of the saree, top and bottom. Against the plain black, each one stands out clearly, giving the border a bold, regal character.
Special Techniques: The silk. This is a 100% handloom Kanchipuram in pure mulberry silk, woven in four-ply construction: four fine silk threads twisted together into every strand before weaving. It’s like twisting four thin strands into one rope. Each thread is fine on its own, but together they’re strong. That’s what gives the saree its rich body, deep lustre and long life.
How the stripes are woven. The stripes are built into the loom before weaving even begins. The warp (the thousands of lengthwise threads) is laid out in bands: a group of dark rose threads, then a fine zari thread, then a group of black threads, then zari again, repeating across the width. As the weaver passes the crosswise thread through row after row, these bands become the stripes you see. Keeping every stripe straight and every zari line evenly spaced across six yards means the warp has to be set up with great care. One misplaced thread and the line breaks.
The small zari roses. Each rose is woven in by hand as the saree is made. For every row, the weaver lifts exactly the right warp threads and passes the golden zari through only where the rose needs it, then beats the row down and moves to the next. Row by row, each tiny rose takes shape, and every one has to match its neighbours in size and spacing.
The Gandaberunda motifs. The two-headed birds are the most intricate part of the saree. Each one is planned thread by thread, with every feather, eye and wing tip mapped out before weaving. The weaver then builds the bird row by row, lifting the right threads and laying the zari exactly where each detail belongs. Because the motif is large and detailed, a single bird takes many rows of careful counting, and every bird along both borders has to come out identical. Against plain black there’s nowhere to hide a mistake. A crooked wing or a missed thread would show instantly.
The heavy zari pallu. In the pallu, zari runs across almost every row. The weaver works the gold and the black silk together to form the dense lattice of diamonds and flowers, switching between them at exactly the right points so each small motif stays sharp. Weaving this much zari is slow and physically demanding, and the pallu alone takes a large share of the saree’s total weaving time.
The zari. The zari is tested zari: a silk core wrapped in metallic thread, checked for quality and consistency. It isn’t real gold; “tested” refers to the verified quality of the zari. The silk core keeps it soft and flexible, so even the heavy pallu drapes smoothly instead of standing stiff, and it holds its glow over the years instead of tarnishing.
Time. Setting up the striped warp, weaving the zari roses, building every Gandaberunda by hand and weaving a fully zari-covered pallu all take time. A Kanchipuram like this takes several weeks of skilled work at the loom.
Silk Mark. The saree carries the Silk Mark, the Government of India’s certification that it’s pure silk. It’s independent confirmation of the fabric, not just the seller’s word.
Season: All seasons
Care Instructions: Only dry cleaning. Never steam iron. If ironing at home, place a cotton/mulmul cloth on top of the saree and use your iron at the lowest heat setting. Our skilled artisans use natural dyes for all our handloom collection and this will protect the intricate zari work, fabric and wont harm your precious handloom.
Store in a cotton bag or a muslin cloth to protect against moisture.

Handloom sarees are entirely hand-woven on traditional looms by skilled artisans. Natural variations like minor thread ends, slight pattern variations, or subtle texture differences are authentic characteristics, not defects. These make each piece truly one-of-a-kind.
We photograph our sarees professionally to show accurate colors. However, slight variations may occur due to screen settings and lighting. The natural handloom process may also create subtle color variations, which add to its authenticity.
