Habaspuri takes its name from Habaspur in Kalahandi, where this weave has been practised for centuries. What defines it is its motif language: fish, temple, flower and geometric tribal forms, built entirely from extra weft threadwork rather than zari. No metallic thread, no embroidery — every motif is woven into the fabric on the loom, in dyed silk thread.
The difficulty lies in the counting. Each band of motifs must be built pick by pick, with the weaver changing coloured threads by hand and tracking the pattern from memory. Any drift shows immediately across the length of the saree, and the dense border bands demand hours of work for just a few inches of cloth. That's why a Habaspuri takes so long on the loom, and why so few weavers still master it.
