Motifs/Patterns: This saree brings together deep maroon, black, and ivory — a combination that reads as classic and grounded rather than loud. It's woven in premium mulberry silk, and that's what you notice first when you handle it: it's light, it has a natural lustre, and it falls around the body with a soft, easy flow rather than stiffness. That drape is the reason it works across so many settings — it's polished enough for the office or a formal work event, traditional enough for a puja, and festive enough for a celebration. The pallu, with its multi-coloured ikat motifs against black, is what tips it from "elegant" into "memorable."
The body carries the pattern that defines a Sachipar: a clean geometric grid of fine white lines over deep maroon, forming a precise check across the full length of the saree. These checks aren't printed. They're built into the cloth by aligning pre-dyed yarn on the loom so the lines meet exactly where they should — which is far harder than it sounds and is the whole skill of this weave. What makes this particular piece different is the ivory mid-panel the weaver has introduced: a wide band of ivory silk that splits the maroon checks, edged on both sides by rows of small temple spires in red, yellow, green, and pink ikat. It's a fresh take on a traditional layout — the classic Sachipar grid is all there, but the ivory panel gives the eye somewhere to rest and makes the saree feel current rather than strictly conventional.
The pallu shifts to a black ground and carries the most elaborate work on the saree. Multi-coloured ikat motifs are woven across it in the classic Odisha vocabulary — deer figures in mustard yellow, a peacock-style bird, lotus flowers in red and green, and clusters of small dots in blue, green, pink, and orange scattered between them. Fine gold zari stripes run across the black, giving the whole section a quiet structure underneath the motifs. It's rich without being heavy, and the black base makes every colour on it stand out. The saree comes with an ikkat blouse piece in pure mulberry silk.
Border Details: The border runs broad along both the top and bottom of the saree, on a black ground, and it's the ikat work here that does the talking. Ikat floral motifs in red, orange, and green sit in a row along the band, flanked by arrow-shaped ikat motifs and fine gold zari lines that frame the whole thing. The signature look of ikat — those slightly feathered, soft-edged outlines on the flowers — is fully visible here. That softness isn't a flaw; it's the fingerprint of the technique, and it's what tells you the border was dyed into the yarn rather than printed on. Just inside the border, a row of black temple spires (kumbha) points into the maroon body.
Special Techniques: A Sachipar (traditionally Saktapar) is a check-patterned saree from the Bargarh–Sambalpur region of western Odisha, and it belongs to the family of Sambalpuri bandha — the Odia word for ikat. Ikat is a tie-and-dye technique, but the tying and dyeing happen on the yarn before it's woven, not on the finished cloth. The weaver binds sections of thread tightly, dips the bundles in dye, and repeats for each colour. The bound sections resist the dye; the open sections take it. When the yarn finally goes on the loom, the pattern already exists inside the thread — the weaving simply reveals it.
That's why ikat motifs have those soft, slightly blurred edges. The yarn shifts fractionally as it's woven, so a flower or a deer never has a hard printed outline. If the edges were perfectly crisp, it wouldn't be ikat.
The check pattern is the demanding part. To get a clean grid, the weaver has to dye both the warp (lengthwise) and weft (crosswise) yarns in exact sections and then align them on the loom so the white lines cross precisely. One thread out of place and the grid drifts. The temple-spire borders (kumbha) add another layer of difficulty — in Odisha weaving these are traditionally created through interlocking wefts of different colours, a slow, hand-managed process that can't be automated.
The silk itself is mulberry silk — spun by silkworms raised on mulberry leaves, which produces the smoothest, most lustrous, and lightest of the natural silks. It's what gives this saree its flow and its glow, and why it feels lighter than a tussar or a heavier brocade of the same size.
Between tying and dyeing the yarn, aligning it on the loom, and weaving the checks, borders, and pallu, a silk Sachipar of this quality typically takes a weaver several weeks. Every step is done by hand, and every motif you see was decided before the first thread was woven.

Care Instructions: Only dry cleaning. Never steam iron. If ironing at home, place a cotton/mulmul cloth on top of the saree and use your iron at the lowest heat setting.
