Motifs/Patterns: This Gadwal pairs a soft, tussar-toned beige with a rich sindoori red, the shade of sindoor. It's a combination that has meant celebration in Indian homes for generations. Scattered through it are touches of green and silver-toned silk thread, like a few carefully chosen pieces of jewellery. The saree is completely zariless, with every motif woven in resham (pure silk thread). That's what makes it special: the colours do all the talking, with no metallic shine to lean on. Gadwals are known for their grandeur and grace, and this one has both. Pure mulberry silk gives it a soft lustre and a fall that moves beautifully. It belongs in a wedding trousseau and is just as right for a reception, a puja or any auspicious occasion.
The body is a solid field of tussar-toned beige covered with small geometric motifs in green and red threadwork. Each one is a compact square worked as a knot-like lattice, similar to the interlacing lines of a kolam. They're set in diagonal rows that alternate red and green across the full length of the saree. The spacing is even and generous, so the beige stays calm and bright while the small motifs add rhythm. It's like a well-laid tile floor: simple pieces that feel intentional because of how they repeat.
The pallu changes to the sindoori red base and holds the most work in the saree. The transition from the beige body is marked by a feathered red edge. After that comes a row of large paisleys, each resting on a leafy base, woven in silver-toned resham against the red. Below them, bands of fine floral borders, a deep green-and-red lattice and a row of green diamonds lead into a wide central field covered edge to edge in a small repeating lattice of silver-toned silk thread. The whole pallu is resham and threadwork with no zari, yet it still looks rich and grand. It shows that careful thread and colour can do the job metal usually does. The saree ends in tassels and comes with a contrasting blouse piece.
Border Details: The border runs along the top and bottom of the saree on a sindoori red base. It's built in layers, like the tiers of a temple wall. Along the outer edge, a band of silver-toned silk thread carries a repeating row of flower and oval medallion motifs. Next to it runs a band of fine green threadwork, woven so densely into the red that it reads as a deep, rich lattice. On the inside, a row of stepped temple spires rises from the red into the beige body, the classic temple border that Gadwal weaving is known for. Stripes, texture and temple points together make the border feel architectural, and it frames the saree along its full length.
Special Techniques: Gadwal weaving comes from the town of Gadwal in Telangana, and it's known for its grand temple borders and rich pallus. This saree is woven entirely in pure mulberry silk, the smoothest and most lustrous natural silk. That's where its soft glow and graceful fall come from.
Zariless, woven in resham. Most grand Gadwals rely on zari for their richness. This one doesn't use any. Every motif in the border, body and pallu is woven in resham, pure silk thread in green, red and silver-tone. That's harder than it sounds. Zari reflects light and can make simple motifs look impressive. Silk thread can't hide behind shine, so every motif has to be crisp, evenly spaced and cleanly outlined to look rich. The weaver adds each coloured thread by hand only where the pattern needs it, row by row.
Woven as one single unit. This saree isn't made in parts and joined later. The body, borders and pallu are all woven together on the same loom as one continuous piece. The beige body and the red borders are woven at the same time with separate threads, and the weaver interlocks the two colours by hand at the join on every single row, all along the length of the saree. The temple spires are formed at that same junction, with the weaver stepping the red up and down point by point to build each peak. Because the border is woven into the body rather than attached to it, it can never separate, however many years the saree is worn. It usually takes two weavers working together at the loom to manage the body and the border at the same time.
Between the interlocking borders, the hand-placed temple spires, the multicoloured resham motifs and the fully worked pallu, a saree like this takes several weeks at the loom.
The saree carries the Silk Mark, the Government of India's certification that it's pure silk. It's independent confirmation of the fabric, not just the seller's word.

Care Instructions: Only dry cleaning. Never steam iron. If ironing at home, place a cotton/mulmul cloth on top of the saree and use your iron at the lowest heat setting. Our skilled artisans use natural dyes for all our handloom collection and this will protect the intricate zari work, fabric and wont harm your precious handloom.
