The dual shades are not a dye trick; they're a weaving decision. Each shot-color section is made by running the warp in one color and the weft in another — purple crossed with magenta in the body, gold crossed with olive-green in the mustard sections. Because the two thread colors sit at right angles to each other, the color you see depends on your angle to the fabric. That's why the saree literally changes shade as you move. The saree is woven in the korvai technique, the signature of traditional Kanchipuram craftsmanship.
