Motifs/Patterns: This Gadwal is built on a soft ivory base, framed by a deep ink blue in the borders and pallu. Navy kattam (checks) runs across the body, with small bootas in golden zari and red thread scattered through it. It's sophistication at its peak. The saree doesn't shout; it doesn't need to. The body is soft ivory with navy kattam, the classic checks woven straight into the fabric. Fine navy lines run both lengthwise and across, forming a neat, even grid. Inside the kattam, small round bootas alternate: some in golden tested zari, some in red threadwork, set in diagonal rows. It's a simple idea done with discipline: the kattam gives order, the bootas give sparkle and colour, and the ivory keeps everything calm and fresh. This pattern runs through the full length of the saree.
The pallu is where the grandeur of Gadwal shows. It switches to the ink blue base. A row of large silver zari paisleys opens the section, followed by bands of red temple triangles and red threadwork vines. Then comes the main field, covered edge to edge in dense silver zari weaving: a close lattice of small lotus and flower motifs that catches the light like a sheet of fine metalwork. The red bands between the zari sections keep the silver from feeling cold, and the navy gives it all a rich, deep background. It's the signature Gadwal finish: a quiet body followed by a grand pallu. The saree ends in tassels and comes with a contrasting blouse piece in ink blue, scattered with red and golden bootas.
Border Details: The border runs along the top and bottom of the saree on an ink blue base, and it's built in layers. At the very edge is a thin line of bottle green. Next comes a wide band of silver tested zari with flower medallions and cross-shaped motifs repeating in a steady rhythm. On either side of it, rows of small red threadwork flowers look like strings of red beads. On the inner edge, a row of stepped temple spires rises from the border into the ivory body, the classic temple border Gadwals are known for. Green, silver, red and navy together give the border depth, like the tiers of a temple wall, and it frames the saree from end to end.
Special Techniques: What a Gadwal is. Gadwal sarees come from the town of Gadwal in Telangana. The tradition is known for three things: contrast borders, temple spires and a grand pallu. This saree is woven entirely by hand in pure mulberry silk, the smoothest and most lustrous of the natural silks. That's where its soft glow and fluid fall come from.
Setting up the loom. Before a single row is woven, the weaver prepares the warp: thousands of lengthwise silk threads stretched across the loom. The warp is laid out in sections: ivory threads for the body, ink blue threads for the two borders, and navy threads placed at fixed intervals inside the ivory section for the kattam. Getting this plan right is like laying the foundation of a house. Everything woven afterwards depends on it.
Weaving the kattam. As weaving begins, the weaver passes ivory thread across the body and, at the same fixed spacing, switches to navy. The navy threads running lengthwise and the navy threads running across cross each other, and that's what forms each check. Keeping every square the same size across six yards means careful counting on every row, because one miscount and the grid drifts out of line.
Weaving the border into the body: how the temple border is made. This is the heart of Gadwal weaving. The ivory body and the ink blue border are woven at the same time, row by row, each with its own shuttle of thread. At the point where the two colours meet, the weaver hooks the ivory thread and the blue thread around each other by hand on every single row. This interlocking method is known in Telangana as kupadam.
The temple spires are created at that same meeting point. Imagine building a staircase with bricks. For a few rows, the weaver lets the blue move a little further into the ivory, then a little further, and then steps it back. Row by row, those small steps stack up into a pointed temple peak. Each spire is counted and built by hand, and every peak has to match the one beside it in height and angle along the full length of the saree. Because the border is interlocked into the body thread by thread rather than stitched or attached, it can never come apart, however many years the saree is worn. The work is demanding enough that it usually takes two weavers at the loom, working in rhythm, one managing the body and one the border.
The motifs. The bootas in the body, the paisleys and the dense lattice in the pallu are all woven in by hand. For each row, the weaver lifts exactly the right warp threads and passes the zari or the red silk thread through only where the motif needs it, then beats the row down and moves to the next. Row after row, a paisley or a small lotus slowly appears. The weaver works from a planned design, but it's the count and control in their hands that keep every motif clean and identical to its neighbour.
The zari. The zari is tested zari: a genuine silk core wrapped in metallic thread, checked for quality and consistency. It isn't real gold or silver; "tested" refers to the verified quality of the zari. It still makes a big difference compared with imitation zari:
Look: tested zari has a soft, warm glow. Imitation zari, usually a plastic film, has a flat, glittery shine.
Feel: the silk core keeps it soft and flexible, so even the heavily worked pallu drapes smoothly instead of standing stiff or scratching.
Life: tested zari holds its shine over the years. Imitation zari tends to tarnish or break at the folds.
Time. Between setting the warp, weaving the kattam, interlocking the borders, building every temple spire by hand and weaving a fully worked zari pallu, a saree like this takes several weeks of work by skilled weavers.
Silk Mark. The saree carries the Silk Mark, the Government of India's certification that it's pure silk. It's independent confirmation of the fabric, not just the seller's word.
