What makes it contemporary is the sequins work — woven straight into the border and pallu, scattering over the textured base like light on water. Now the part that deserves a moment of respect: the sequins are not pasted, stuck, or embroidered on afterwards. Each of the sequins is woven into the fabric while the saree is still on the loom — the weaver threads them onto the yarn and places them one by one, pick by pick, as the cloth builds. One misjudged placement and the wave pattern breaks. Doing this on matka, whose thick-and-thin slubbed yarn already demands constant tension adjustment, makes it doubly difficult.
